Love Life, Not Stuff

"Realize that life, not stuff, is what matters. Objects are just objects — if you lose them, if they get stolen or destroyed … it’s not a big deal. They’re just objects — not your life. Your life is the series of moments that is steaming through your consciousness right now, and how you use those moments and what you fill them with is what truly matters, not what you fill your home with. At the end of this short journey, you’ll look back and remember your experiences, the people you loved and who loved you back, the things you did and didn’t do. Not the stuff you had. "

Funny

A man came home from work and found his three children outside, still in their pajamas, playing in the mud, with empty food boxes and wrappers strewn all around the front yard. The door to his wife's car was open, as was the front door to the house, and there was no sign of the dog.

Proceeding into the entry, he found an even bigger mess. A lamp had been knocked over, and the throw rug was wadded against one wall. In the front room, the TV was loudly blaring a cartoon channel and the family room was strewn with toys and various items of clothing.

In the kitchen, dishes filled the sink, breakfast food was spilled on the counter. The fridge door was open wide, dog food was spilled on the floor, a broken glass lay under the table and a small pile of sand was spread by the back door.

He quickly headed up the stairs, stepping over toys and more piles of clothes, looking for his wife. He was worried that she might be ill, or that something serious had happened.

He was met with a small trickle of water as it made its way out the bathroom door. As he peered inside he found his wife still curled up in the bed in her pajamas, reading a novel. She looked up at him, smiled, and asked how his day went.

He looked at her bewildered and asked, "What happened here today?"

She again smiled and answered, "You know how every day when you come home from work you askme what in the world I do all day?"

"Yes."

"Well, today I didn't do it."

Natural Team

The flightless fairy penguin of Australia stands less than a foot tall and is clumsy on land, where the fox is its natural enemy. Alone, one penguin wouldn't survive for long. So, after each day in the water, they gather where the surf meets ths shore, waiting until the last penguin joins them. Then, shoulder to shoulder, they march up the beach to their burrows. They support each other, they rely on each other. And everyone, except the fox wins.

The acrobatci, high-energy dolphin must spend most of its time hunting to survive. But when a pod members is sick or injured, others will set aside their own needs to come to its rescue. A pair of dolphins, one on each side, will stay beside it, lifting it to the surface to breathe each breath--sometimes for days at a time--until it recovers the strength to swim for itself.

With every flap of its wings, the lead bird in a flight of Canadian geeese is breaking through a wall of air, creating a swirling vortex that provides a "push" for each follower. Some estimates show that geese in a V-formation can fly as much as 70 percent farther than they could fly alone. It's exhausting work to be the lead goose, but they have an answer to that too: they take turns. When the leader drops back, another takes its place.

Friendly

"Sometimes, busy people need to remind themselves (and us) how busy they are by shaving off the last two seconds of what would otherwise be a pleasant interaction.

At a restaurant yesterday, the maitre d, who is paid to be busy, looked up our name in the reservations book and then said, "over there against the wall," while he pointed. He repreated this approach with at least three other parties.

How much longer to say, "Welcome, we'll be ready for you in just a second. Would you mind waiting over there please?" Amazingly, saying that while smiling takes precisely the same amount of time.

If you're going to interact, spend a few extra beats to be calm and gracious. It's hard to overstate how much better everyone will feel and how much more productive you'll become as a result."

Fun

When we are very young, everything is play. We don’t worry about failing because we’re so excited about the trying. We haven’t yet learned that we’re supposed to think of ourselves as being on trial before the world.

Think back to your childhood and the first time you rode a bike. Or jumped off the high dive. My guess is that the giddiness and excitement you felt outweighed any bumping-into-curbs or belly-flopping that you might have done. You didn’t do it perfectly, but you had a blast making the attempt. And because you had so much fun, you did it again, and again, until you improved. But the improving wasn’t the goal. The fun was.

So here is the reason why I’m saying that it’s vital to screw things up once in a while. You must learn that it is not the end of the world. That you can recover, and keep trying, and get better.

You must learn failure-resiliency. You need to know, deep in your bones, that you can always bounce back.

And maybe even have some fun in the process.

Why Hire an Athlete?

...Or let your child be an athlete.

"An athlete knows he or she has to warm up before playing the game and is therefore more likely to be prepared for the job, the customer and the sale.

Athletes love to compete. Athletes know there are skills that must be learned and mastered in order to win. And athletes have the drive, determination and self discipline to learn them and master them.

There are other great, but subtle qualities that athletes have:
  1. They have made friends with many of their teammates, but even the ones they have not made friends with, they still know how to get along with, cooperate with and play with as a team.
  2. They have made victory a habit. They know what winning feels like and how to repeat it.
  3. They have stamina, based on practice and desire.
  4. They have superior hand-eye coordination, and are more observant of their surroundings.
  5. They have the ability, interest and desire to learn 'the game' and not just 'the job.'
  6. They play by the rules and have leared there's a penalty or price for not playing by the rules...

...Think about this: all athletes play to win. All athletes want to succeed. They have the internal drive not only to play the competition and beat them, but also to compete against themselves, always bettering themselves. Athletes are always raising their own personal standards--always aiming to achieve their personal best."

Your American Dream...

...Whatever you want it to be.

"In our society today, there is a lot of pressure. Pressure to get a degree. Pressure to make money. Plressure to be successful. And pressure to find what it is that you want to do for the rest of your life. But here's the thing: Society isn't right.

You don't have to go to college right out of high school. You don't have to decide on a major in a four-year time period because 'you're supposed to.' You don't have to get stuck doing something for the rest of your life that you don't want to do. The fact is, there are a lot of people out there who have absolutely no idea what they want to do, but know they want to find something. And that's okay.

For many people, it takes years of trying new jobs, activities, clubs, associations, traveling and life experiences to figure out what it is they are truly passionate about and how to make that work for them.

I read about a study where a group of teenagers ranked what the 'American Dream' meant to them. The highest ranking answer was, 'simply being happy, no matter what I do.' If that's the American Dream, isn't all the pressure to live up to other people's standards a waste of time?

I recently spoke at a high school where I asked students what they wanted to do after graduation. One student said he wanted to own his own plumbing business. Everyone in the class laughed at him. I immediately told the class to stop laughing and explained how people laughed at me when I said I was starting a magazine. Nobody has the right to tell you what you want to do in life.

If you feel like you've got a huge weight on your shoulders and have to decide your eternal path by tomorrow, don't worry--you can always change your mind. Don't let outside pressures, whatever they might be, influence your right to your American Dream.

It may take a while. Ray Kroc didn't launch McDonald's until he was 52, but the moral is that he kept trying. And that's my message to you. Don't ever stop trying to find your own American Dream. You've got to go out there and find it, because it's sure not going to come find you."

Mother Teresa Prayer

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.
